The Review: Oh my wordy word! What a non stop, can’t rip your eyes away from, don’t know what’s going to happen gem! Obviously from the blurb you see that this is the story of Becca Gates, only it isn’t just that, it’s also the story of Pearl Gates (what a great name!) whose story we open with in the form of a prologue. We then move to her daughter Becca, who seems to despair of her mother, and her brother Freddy who is younger. I jumped straight in, loving the flouncing but likeable Pearl, who is an author of romance novels, and her less than enthusiastic, editor daughter, who is actually the first person narrator, but who I worried I mightn’t like. Sure she had every right to be worried, her mother is marrying a many she’s only known for weeks and who everyone assumes is her junior by years, but Becca’s concern doesn’t seem to come from there, instead she’s worried she’ll lose her home and possibly her job, as her mother has decided her four books a year, give the crowd what they want job isn’t what SHE wants any more. Luckily I soon settled into Becca’s personality (hard not to, as she brings you around all the drama that’s going on!)

There’s their move to a new house in the form of Pearl’s fiancé’s house, which comes complete with all forms of wealth, privilege and help, his son who does not approve of any of this, Freddy (Becca’s brother) suddenly having to find his own feet, the appearance of a person from Becca’s past, and not only that, but something serious is going down in Rivermede! Alongside this I of course have to say how much I enjoyed the writing references that come with Pearl being an author and Becca now researching the story of Stella Markham, who has a past that wasn’t compatible with her continuing to become a sailing champion.

I loved the drama and romance, savoured the secrets and the fantastic setting, along with historic references and relished, well, it all really! Read in a night and I have to say thanks so much to the author and Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for introducing me to a genre and author I’ll be visiting again.
