I am thrilled, thrilled, thrilled (yes it’s gonna be a gushy one) to bring you this, a review for the excellent A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores by the epic Laura Briggs … and there’s a giveaway!!!
What they say: It looks like a perfect Cornish autumn, with aspiring novelist Maisie Clark still finding inspiration as a maid at the historic Penmarrow Hotel. Between the staff of quirky co-workers, glamorous and unusual guests, and her growing friendship with the charming but mysterious Sidney Daniels, Maisie is living out adventures instead of just penning them in the pages of her would-be novel’s growing number of chapters.
And then there’s the slight problem of keeping the balance between friendship and ‘something more’ with Sidney, who’s helping introduce her to the village’s version of a Cornish Halloween, and has recently taken an interest in Maisie’s secret that may change things between them. But evenMaisie’s imagination can’t conjure the unusual event this Halloween brings to the Penmarrow. Aneccentric earl has chosen this site to host his lavish birthday celebration that includes a pretty (and perceptive) young psychic whose predictions seem to have everyone on edge — and, to Maisie’s delight, the elusive novelist Alistair Davies is rumored to be part of the guest list! But with the earl’s bickering relatives and illustrious friends on hand— and more than one ghost of the past waiting to be revealed — it’s anyone’s guess what the festivities will bring before the party is over.
Will the psychic foretell doom for the earl’s gathering—and is her ‘gift’ as genuine as it seems? WillMaisie finally meet her favorite author face to face? And, more importantly, what about the romantic sparks that fly between Maisie and Sidney?
The Review: You’ll remember I read the first in this series and declared “Yes!!! I’ve a new author to follow!”
Actually I’m stopping you there. This is a warning to go back and check out book one. Which I’m torn on doing.
Let me explain, book one, epic book, book two, epic, but in a ying-yang different way. So I want you to read book one to submerge yourself into this fantastically drawn and created world, but at the same time I’m hopping about wanting you to read this one now TOO!!!
Exhales. Sorry. I’m back. My excitement surfaced pretty much straight away on checking out the letter to the reader Ms. Briggs opens with, a letter telling us of her love for psychic tales and Halloween lore. I’ve a bit of a love for all things Halloween-y too. I don’t totally click with horror any more, but I love the spook element, and when put with Agatha Cristie-esque scenarios, a stately, slightly manor house complete with so much culture, writing connections and rom com? Colour me thrilled!!!
But yes, I’m digressing again. So we’re back with ‘American tourist and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark’ in a writing style and narrative that reeled me in. We are introduced to varied characters as she lives as a maid at The Penmorrow hotel, hoping to get to meet an elusive and reclusive author to help mentor her in her writing.
When it was declared that a seance and Halloween party ( and possibly a murder party too!!) was to be held to mark a birthday of the earl, I exclaimed aloud, as I did for nearly every part of this fun but stunningly atmospheric noir, a book where my eyes relished every last beautiful word.
Agatha Christie is mentioned and my God this read presents us with one of her settings with an array of guests, a psychic and some gripping mysteries. There were secrets and rumours all wrapped up in hugely grand gothic manor Halloween bows. I particularly adored the seance and an occurance that made me question everything! The art, music and poetry inside this treat was right up the beautifully gothic alley this book allows you to tip-toe along, and sealed this for me as a book I’ll be recommending to EVERYONE this Halloween. Thanks so much to Rachel’s Random Resources for affording me the privilege of reading this book in return for an honest review.
Rating: infinity out of five. ( Go get!!)
